For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology
The FIRST Faces of Robotics
Monday, June 25, 1:30–4:30 pm, Level 2 public space near Maple Point
The word "robot" comes from the Czech word "robota," meaning "drudgery." Today's robots, however, are anything but boring, teaching kids and teachers alike how engineering, math, and science technologies can work together to make engaging, interactive machines!
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, FIRST, is a continuum of programs which provide young people (ages six to 18) with hands-on learning and life experiences that build interest in science, math, technology, and engineering educational and career pursuits. Each year, FIRST supports more than 300 robotics competitions worldwide, engaging more than 130,000 kids in after-school learning. An additional 60,000 volunteers and mentors participate annually.
On Monday afternoon, visit FIRST students, teachers, and facilitators for an interactive demonstration of some of the robots built for the 2007 FIRST Robotics (high school) and FIRST Lego League (elementary and middle school) competitions.

Model Classrooms
The ISTE conference team traveled far and wide over the last 18 months, listening to what you and your colleagues wanted to see at NECC this year. What we heard was that people wanted to see model classrooms up close and personal. But what people didn't want to see is just a bunch of cool bells and whistles without substantial content. Behold the "Model Lesson in a Model Classroom" format! 20 lucky participants play student during each session, and up to 150 additional observers can watch the learning process unfold. One classroom presents elementary lessons; the other presents secondary lessons. See Model Classroom listings for topics, presenters, and descriptions.
Furnishings, hardware systems, and interactive whiteboards graciously provided by Gateway, Apple, Promethean, SMART, and Steelcase/Polyvision.
